Case Summary
The patient is young boy who had a dental cleaning and developed facial swelling and a fever. He was admitted to the hospital. The health plan denied the inpatient admission as not medically necessary. The health plan's determination is overturned. The inpatient stay was medically necessary as his symptoms were progressing quickly with an increased amount of swelling and pain. He was also dehydrated due to difficulty tolerating oral fluids. He required parenteral antibiotic treatment to treat the infection and prevent the spread as well as intravenous fluids to maintain hydration.
