Case Summary
This is a patient with a past medical history significant for menorrhagia, uterine fibroids, migraine, and iron deficiency anemia who presented to the hospital with a chief complaint of left lower quadrant pain, vaginal pain, weakness, dysuria, nausea and blood tinged stools.
Given concerns for a urinary tract infection (UTI) and anemia, the patient was subsequently admitted to the hospital. She was started on ceftriaxone.
The health plan's determination of medical necessity of upheld. Her chronic anemia responded appropriately to two units PRBCS transfused. She did not have abnormal imaging. Her UTI did not require inpatient treatment nor did her pain control.
