Case Summary
This is a patient with back pain for the last one and a half years with worsening pain in the last six months. She has a history of left lumbar (L) 3/4 hemilaminectomy and microdiscectomy. She has has at least one lumbar epidural injection in the past with improvement. The patient also has undergone 8 sessions of physical therapy with worsening pain. She currently takes ibuprofen and is allergic to Morphine. The health plan's determination is upheld. The proposed health service, Intracept procedure-interosseous ablation of the basivertebral nerve, is unlikely to be more beneficial than any standard treatment or treatments for chronic low back pain. The two studies included and labeled as Document #1 and Document #2 represent a small group of patients (Document #1 225 patients and Document #2 17 patients) with a very brief follow up of only twelve months post procedure. Both studies fail to demonstrate the Intracept procedure as a long term effective treatment for chronic low back pain.
